Three fair ways to split rent
There’s no single right answer, only what your house agrees is fair. Here’s your rent all three ways, side by side:
| Room | Equal per person | By room size | Half equal, half by size |
|---|---|---|---|
| You · 16 m² | $300.00 | $400.00 | $350.00 |
| Mei · 12 m² | $300.00 | $300.00 | $300.00 |
| Jordan · 8 m² | $300.00 | $200.00 | $250.00 |
Equal per person
Everyone pays the same. Simple, and fair when the rooms are about the same. A couple counts as two people.
By room size
Rent follows bedroom floor area. Fairer when rooms differ a lot, but it ignores that everyone shares the kitchen, bathroom and lounge equally.
Half equal, half by size
Half the rent covers the shared spaces and is split per person; the other half follows room size. A common middle ground, and our default.
Extras like an ensuite, a balcony or a car space? Agree a small weekly top-up for that room and take it off the others’ share.
Bills: split by person, not by room
Power, internet and water depend on how many people live there, not how big their room is. So bills are split per person here: a couple in one room pays two shares. If someone moves out partway through a bill, split that bill by the days each person lived there.
Keep the house square
Save your house as a group and everyone gets one link: who owes who in the fewest payments, plus a hangout room with a house chat, a list of who’s borrowed whose things, and Houseshare, our board game about… share houses. Nobody else needs an account.

- How do you split rent fairly when the rooms are different sizes?
- Either split it by bedroom floor area, or (a common middle ground) split half the rent equally for the shared spaces and the other half by room size. The calculator above shows all three ways side by side so your house can pick.
- Should a couple sharing a room pay more?
- Usually, yes. They use the shared spaces and the bills twice as much as one person. Counting them as two people for the shared part of the rent and for bills is a common way to handle it.
- How should flatmates split the electricity bill?
- Per person is the simplest fair way, since usage follows people, not room size. If someone was away or moved in partway through, split by the days each person was there.
- Does everyone need an app or an account?
- No. Splitting needs no account. Saving a live link takes a free account; your flatmates never need one.
