Looking for a Splitwise alternative? Here's what changed — and what to use instead.
Splitwise used to be free. In 2023, it added a daily transaction cap to the free tier — and free users have been hitting it ever since.
What actually changed
Before 2023, Splitwise had no daily limit. Today, free accounts are capped at roughly 3–5 expense entries per day (Splitwise doesn't publish the exact number, and it appears to vary). Once you hit it, you're blocked from adding more until the next day — or told to upgrade to Splitwise Pro.
For occasional use (rent, one bill a month), you'll probably never notice. For a trip, a group dinner, or a busy week with roommates, it's common to hit the cap before lunch.
The real cost, if your group upgrades
Splitwise Pro runs $4.99/month or roughly $39.99–49.99/year, per user. Because balances are shared across a group, one person having Pro doesn't remove the cap for everyone else — if your whole household wants it gone, that's the price times every roommate. For a 4-person apartment, that's realistically $150-200+/year just to remove a limit that didn't exist a few years ago.
What people are actually saying
"The new limit of only 3 transactions per day is ridiculous... designed to frustrate free users."
